practice in sampling, placed Abstract in the context of probability theory. We hope to show the The derivation and correspondence between the two development of weights for approaches to estimation and sample surveys has come almost how for certain classes of exclusively from the sample distributions the two survey tradition. Yet the approaches lead to the same forms of sampling that are results, but via different most commonly used have direct paths. The paths are what interpretations as realizations of stochastic events arising from well defined probability distributions. This paper attempts to develop weights for estimators from sample surveys using maximum likelihood methods applied to the likelihood functions for make this investigation interesting, because they force the statistician to consider what assumptions are being made regarding how the data has arisen and whether the procedures used adequately reflect real life.

Creating Bus Timetables Under Stochastic Demand

Local bus network is the most popular transit mode and the only available transit mode in the majority of cities of the world. Increasing the utility of this mode which increases its share from urban trips is an important goal for city planners. Timetable setting as the second component of bus network design problem (network route design timetable setting vehicle assignment crew assignment) hav...

Calibration Weighting to Compensate for Extreme Values, Non-response and Non-coverage in Labor Force Survey

Frame imperfection, non-response and unequal selection probabilities always affect survey results. In order to compensate for the effects of these problems, Devill and Särndal (1992) introduced a family of estimators called calibration estimators. In these estimators we look for weights that have minimum distance with design weights based on a distance function and satisfy calibration equa...

A Benders' Decomposition Method to Solve Stochastic Distribution Network Design Problem with Two Echelons and Inter-Depot Transportation

In many practical distribution networks, managers face significant uncertainties in demand, local price of building facilities, transportation cost, and macro and microeconomic parameters. This paper addresses design of distribution networks in a supply chain system which optimizes the performance of distribution networks subject to required service level. This service level, which is consider...

Methods for Extreme Weights in Sample Surveys Methods for Extreme Weights in Sample Surveys

In survey sampling practice, planned and unplanned variation in the sampling weights can result in inflated sampling variances. As a result, extreme sampling weights are sometimes trimmed to reduce the sampling variance. However, when sampling weights are trimmed, a bias can be introduced into the survey estimates. The goal of sampling weight trimming is to reduce the sampling variance while av...

1998: Estimation of the Sample Size and Coverage for Guaranteed-coverage Nonnormal Tolerance Intervals

We propose Monte Carlo algorithms to estimate the sample size and coverage of guaranteed-coverage tolerance intervals for nonnormal distributions. The current literature focuses on computation of the tolerance factor, but addresses less on the sample size, coverage, and confidence, which need to be set prior to the tolerance factor. The coverage estimation algorithm, which always converges, is ...
